Shopping in the village
Palekastro is a small village however offering a large amount
of shops. Finally no one wants to drive to Sitia for each and
everything and in addition the local economic structure has to
be supported.
Typically for Palekastro and actually typically for all larger
villages are the "Mini Markets". Almost everything
the daily need demands is offered. In addition this kind of
business is the only way to earn a few Euros for several inhabitants.
The number of these shops is accordingly high. Buy here and
there, distribute your support to everyone. Anyway the assortment
is almost congruent..

Mixed bag
In the mini Market everything is offered from fresh
fruit and vegetable to all kinds and toys and teas as well as
fishing rod equipment. Much is sold after weight and not after
unit price which leads to the fact that the balance is permanently
endeavoured and goods are placed immediately in a plastic. The
more one buys the higher becomes the number of the plastic bags
you have to carry. Typically crete.
Bread from the local bakery
The village baker resists successfully and with a rich number
of very different sorts of bread and tasty French Croissants
the supremacy of the baking giants, which inundate Crete with
its industrial cheap bread. His dark bread made out of barley
wholemeal is outstanding with just a few drops of olive oil
and tomatoes on it, a must try. Support the local bakery, buy
its fresh and handmade products and leave the industrial bread
in the shelves.

Further shops and services
During the hot summer entering of the beach without plastic
shoes aint feasible. In a few seconds you'll wear fire blisters
at the feet. Meet the shop store and get some plastic shoes
just for a handful of Euros.
I recommend the very well sorted photo shop
of Manolis
Tsantakis which offers also daily newspapers from all around
the world as well as a great amount of good books.
Since spring 2002 there's a well assorted
game and dive shop. Need a haircut? Trust the hairdresser's
shop.
In trouble? Feeling sick? Go to the well sorted
pharmacy with outstanding consultation abandoned. Unfortunately
there is no physician yet in the place. With serious disease
you must drive to the hospital in Sitia 19 kilometres away.
